Motorsports Racing Legacies - Marshall Teague and Hudson Hornet Dominate Tracks in Early 1950's
Marshall Teague and the Hudson Hornet February 11 was a big day for the car and the driver. On that day in 1951, NASCAR driver Marshall Teague drove a Hudson Hornet to victory in the 160-mile Daytona Grand National at Daytona Beach, Florida. It was a preview of things to come for both. The Hornet had an innovative "step down" chassis design, and lower center of gravity which improved handling. In 1951, the manufacturer outfitted the car with a bigger engine. The Hornet was a powerhouse on the NASCAR circuit until 1955, when rule changes emphasized horsepower over handling. The Hudson Motor Company - Founded on February 24, 1909 by eight Detroit businessmen - Company was...
What do the NASCAR Flags Signify?
If you have seen any of the professional NASCAR racing sports events, you may be wondering about the meaning of the different flags used during the races. If you do not know any better, you may think that there is only one type of flag used to signify the start of the race, which is the same flag used once the winning driver first reaches the finish line. However, in professional racing scene such as the series of NASCAR events, there are several flags used and each color and type of flag has a different meaning. If you want to be a certified NASCAR fan, you should at least take the time to learn about the meanings of the different NASCAR flags used in a race. For NASCAR or the National Association...
NASCAR Race Legend - Tim Richmond
Tim Richmond was one of NASCAR's most flamboyant drivers. Growing up in wealth, he was accustomed to getting attention and having the best things in life. Tim didn't grow up in racing like a lot of NASCAR's early drivers. When he was 21, a friend let him drive a few laps in his sprint car. Within minutes, Tim was beating his friend's time and he knew right away that he was hooked. Starting out in racing, in 1980 he won the Indy 500 Rookie of the Year award. In 1981 he changed to stockcars and by 1982, had become a winner. His racing career only lasted less than eight full seasons, but during that time, he made quite an impression. He was known for driving Rick Hendrick's No. 25 Folger's Chevrolet...
NASCAR Racing - Where Pop Culture Meets Rubber Everywhere
NASCAR Racing is a fascinating pop culture phenomenon that gained a lot of popularity in the 1960s through today. There are a lot of Hollywood stars that have been drawn into the NASCAR frenzy as well. I'm sure the fun, the fury, and the speed of the NASCAR experience can draw on anyone. Some of NASCAR's drivers have even appeared in some of Hollywood's ventures. The NASCAR drivers I'm talking about are Jeff Gordon, Jamie McMurray, and Dale Earnhardt., Jr. If you see a movie series like the Fast and the Furious, you can see that fast cars and daring drivers have become increasingly popular. NASCAR Racing is divided into several "Cup Series" racing competitions. Its popularity in pop culture...

NASCAR Race Legends - Cale Yarborough
Cale Yarborough was born in Timmonsville, SC near Darlington Raceway. He attended his first Southern 500 in 1950 as a spectator. That was the beginning of his love for racing. He wanted to drive, not just watch. As a teenager he decided to try it, so he lied about his age to be able to compete. Needless to say, he got caught and was disqualified by NASCAR. His real debut was in 1957 when he raced in the Southern 500, driving the #30 Pontiac. His career cranked up in the "60's when he finished fifth twice in 1963. The next season brought his first win at Valdosta Speedway, placing him tenth in the final standings. In 1967 he won two races but dropped to 20th because of only running 17 events. In 1968...

If you, like many a young boy (and girl), once dreamed of being a race car driver, its a safe bet that the nearest you came was racing Scalextric slot cars. Slot car racing is a hobby that appeals to both old and young (it never dies, it simply gets filed away until you are old enough to know better!) and has been so for many years now, thanks to the enduring appeal and fantastic array of Scalextric slot cars, tracks and ready made sets. Scalextric first hit the market in the late 1950s in the UK, providing boys with toys that were both exciting and relevant to the growing interest in motor racing across the world. The basic idea has changed little since then, and models from the early days (hotly...

Nascar Races - Top Ten Reasons to Take Your Family
I love taking my family to Nascar races. We are sure to get to at least one event each year and sometimes we get to two or three. I have taken the liberty of writing out my top ten reason why our family loves the day so much in the hopes that others will be able to benefit from a great family outing. 1) The People - The people at Nascar races are the most unique I have ever seen. People are from all walks of life. From the super-rich to the guy who hopes to be able to make his rent payment next month, they all come and they all share a common love for an afternoon - the race. 2) The Noise - There is nothing quite as exhilarating as the scream of a race car as it comes out of a turn and hits the...
Just a few weeks ago, Elliot Sadler thought that he was out of a ride in 2009. After the threat of a lawsuit and Gillette Evernham Motorsports' merger imminent merger with Petty Enterprises, it appears that Sadler will be driving the #19 Dodge next season. Multiple sources have confirmed to Fox Sports that Sadler will be back with GEM after all. Rumors had been swirling that AJ Allmendinger was replacing Sadler in the #19 Dodge for Gillette Evernham Motorsports beginning in 2009. Allmendinger impressed many, including owner George Gillette, with his performance in the final five races of the season in the #10 GEM Dodge. Just before Christmas, Sadler learned that GEM was in negotiations with...

Race Car Bedroom Boy Decorating Idea
With my boys growing love of race cars and little Hot Wheels cars, I worked on this race car bedroom theme decorating idea. This turned out to be one of my inexpensive decorating ideas that came together in only a few hours. I found several bright red race car posters to hang up. Also I made a mobile of toy cars and displayed some toy cars on shelves and dressers. They had already put together several model cars that were painted with bright colors and we displayed them too. Now my race car bedroom boy decorating idea was starting to look like a fun room. I remember back then I was using free samples of carpet remnants to make area rugs. I had simply taped the undersides together to make patchwork...

NASCAR Driver Jimmie Johnson is Here to Win
Jimmie Johnson is here to win, and he proved it for the second week in a row with a victory today at the Richmond International Raceway. A win is always important, but for Johnson, this victory perhaps put the other drivers on notice that he is ready for the Chase. Johnson is going for his third consecutive Cup championship. The last person to do this was Cale Yarborough in 1976 - 1978. Johnson in a Chevrolet was clearly determined to win today and he proved it by holding off a hard charging Tony Stewart and his Toyota at the end. With no wins this season Stewart, a two time series champion is clearly frustrated. Although Stewart is winless, he has qualified for the chase and now needs wins in the...

Just like Ricky Bobby proved in Talladega Nights, it's better to get back in the saddle after a fiery crash than to let fear take over in the driver's seat. For Brazilian IndyCar driver Vitor Meira, May 30 will be the day to test that theory. Meira will travel back to Indianapolis during Memorial Day weekend to face the foe that sent him to the hospital with two broken vertebrae during the 2009 Indianapolis 500, and he's staring the beast (the Indianapolis Motor Speedway) in the eye for this year's installment of the famed Indy 500. 33-year-old Meira, sometimes referred to as the best IRL driver who has never won an IndyCar race, will return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the 2010 Indy...

Selecting Your Lodging For the Indy 500
SELECTING YOUR LODGING: There are many options for lodging when you come to Indianapolis. Besides hotels and motels, there are campgrounds, temporary campsites, and friends or family, if you're lucky to have some who live nearby.. But for our purposes, we are going to focus on hotels/motels primarily with a short discussion about camping at the end. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway sits within the beltway of Indianapolis. Interstate 465, which circles Indianapolis, has downtown located slightly south of center. The IMS would be very close to 9:00 o'clock, if you viewed the beltway like a clock from above. The distance between the speedway and downtown Indianapolis is approximately 5 miles. The...
The Rickenbacker and Hulman Years at the Indy 500
THE RICKENBACKER YEARS In June of 1923, Carl Fisher, relinquished the reins of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and handed them to his fellow stock holder, James Allison and retired from the management team. He announced that the speedway had outlived its purpose, which was to serve as an automobile proving ground. The race was simply a byproduct of that enterprise. Carl would go on to develop Miami Beach and build the prototype to the modern interstate highway with his promotion and development of the Lincoln Highway, which survives to this day to some extent in its reconstituted form. It is otherwise known as Highway 80. By 1926 the founders let it be known that the speedway was up for sale, and...

Emulating his father's proud and fiercely competitive drive, he finished fifth in his very first event and went on to take his first win that same year in only his sixth start. NASCAR Race Legends - Tim Flock
Tim Flock was a pedal to the medal, no holding back driver of the 1950's. He had lightning reflexes and was sometimes compared to "Fireball Roberts". He won over 21% of the 189 races he entered on all tracks. He had two brothers, Bob and Fonty who also raced but tried to steer him away from getting involved in racing. It was his sister Ethel and her husband who really encouraged his racing career and helped him get his start in 1948. In 1949 all three brothers made the Top 10 in the Grand Nationals. It was in the family blood. In 1950 Tim was off the track due to injuries suffered in a wreck at Charlotte. He had a strong comeback though, and finished third in 1951 and won the championship in 1952...
NASCAR Race Drivers - How They Get Started
I got to wondering what is all involved to become a NASCAR Race Driver. Some of the big names in racing today started as young as four years old! A young child interested in becoming a NASCAR Race Driver may want to start young in the carting in your local area to get practice handling a vehicle, and get their name out there. Some tracks that run open wheel Midgets and Sprints do allow drivers before they are of legal driving age on the tracks. Some people suggest getting a "pit pass" to get in and talk to some officials and drivers. In reading up on this, I found out that someone's physical condition can actually affect his or her ability to become a successful NASCAR Race Driver. Physical...
NASCAR Tickets - Denny Hamlin Snakes Martinsville Win

Hamlin cruised into Victory Lane on March 29, enduring a rain delay that postponed his ACL surgery by two days. Hamlin's first-place finish at Martinsville was his first of the year, and the Joe Gibbs Racing superstar now stands at No. 15 on Sprint Cup standings for the season. Denny Hamlin finished in first place for the second time in three years at the recent Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500, beating teammate Joey Logano in the final stretch of the NASCAR showdown. NASCAR Race Legend - Jack Smith
Jack Smith worked at a service station near Roswell, GA in the 1940's. He started racing against the local bootleggers of the area. He wasn't picky "he'd race on rough dirt, superspeedways, or across fields. "I used to watch those guys before the war out at Lakewood and knew I could do that. When I got old enough I entered a race in Thomaston." This was Jack's first race in 1946. "I qualified second to defending national champion Roy Hall but after the race started I spun out a whole bunch so I knew I had some learning ahead of me." In 1949 he raced his first NASCAR event at Charlotte (now Lowe's Motor Speedway) and finished 13th. At Darlington in 1954, Jack drove in one of his most memorable races...
Taking a Look at Stock Car Racing
Stock car racing is one of the most popular forms of racing in America today, as is evidenced by the popularity of the Nascar Nextel Cup. The term "stock car" is derived from the fact that all of the cars used must be original production cars. These cars may be modified for performance, but they cannot be specially designed for racing. An example of a popular modification is the rear spoiler that is added to every stock automobile used in racing. This spoiler forces the air moving over the automobile to provide enough downward pressure to stabilize the vehicle and provide some degree of protection from overturning during a stock car race. In car racing sports, a stock car race is normally played out...
10 Things Every Indy 500 Visitor Should Know
1. HIGHER IS BETTER: It is virtually impossible to see the entire track from any one seat at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. However, it is possible to see substantial portions of the track in some seats. Generally, the higher the seats the more track you will see. At Indianapolis, rows are marked in alphabetical letters starting with A at the bottom and going up from there. After row Z, the letters then begin AA, BB, CC and so on. Seats in the double letter rows typically offer a better view of the track. 2. BIGGER IS NOT BETTER: While many race fans may find reason to quibble with this statement, when it comes to coolers, smaller is better. At least smaller than 14 inches, because that is the...

That's the question of the month for those on the NASCAR circuit, and it's one crew chief/JRM co-owner Tony Eury Jr. hopes to have the answer to soon. Announced in late March, Eury Jr. spoke to ESPN about JR Motorsports' intentions with Patrick's No. 7 car this spring while she's racing her IndyCar vehicle, saying, "The bottom line is the No. 7 car is too good not to be at the race track. Our goal at JR Motorsports has always been to have two full-time Nationwide...

Why Camp At Nascar Races, Especially "redneck" Tracks?
A number of my friends ask me about my love of NASCAR and they have many questions. 1) Why do you go to so many races? 2) Why do you camp at NASCAR races? 3) Wouldn't it be better staying in a hotel? and 4) Is camping cheaper? Well to start off, I simply love the sport of NASCAR. The excitement, the fun, the camaraderie and most of all, my daughter loves NASCAR. It's a huge opportunity for father-daughter bonding and/or a family vacation that is indeed priceless. We started out booking hotel and race packages through tour companies. This was the best way to get started and we enjoyed a number of races together. Our first race was at Charlotte for the Coca Cola 600 and we had a...
